When patients require extensive treatment which involves restoring all teeth of the upper and lower jaws, the treatment is described as full mouth rehabilitation or full mouth reconstruction.
The rehabilitation requires experts from different disciplines to work in coordination with each other to perform their speciality work. Involvement of the Restorative dentist for crowns, bridges, veneers etc, Periodontist for gum health, Endodontist for root canal treatment, Orthodontist for tooth movement, Implantologist for replacing missing teeth with implants and Prosthodontist for adjusting the bite forces is desired for attaining an esthetic and functional result.
People who have severely worn down teeth as a result of long-term acid erosion (foods, beverages, acid reflux) or tooth grinding(clenching), who may/may not have complain of ringing sound in ears, headache, jaw ache, and muscle ache and people who have multiple missing or decayed teeth are candidates which are usually advised full mouth rehabilitation.
Patient’s comprehensive examination of teeth, gums, jaw muscles, existing bite and current esthetics is carried out. Certain diagnostic tests and Xrays like OPG , study models etc are required to be done to establish the need of full mouth rehabilitation for a patient.
Certain changes in lifestyle, eating habits, posture coupled with the patients bite adjustment to create a balanced bite is the most conservative approach.
However, when patients present symptoms of pain and muscle spasm, it is important to relax the muscles and break their habituated movement pattern. The first step of treatment hence involves use of specially fabricated ‘deprogrammer’ plates. Once pain is taken care of, the new, ideal position of the jaw is determined. This jaw position is achieved by giving crowns or onlays on the teeth.
In situations where a person has lost multiple teeth and existing teeth have moved from their original position, a combination of implants(for replacement of missing teeth) and/or realignment of teeth to existing position with braces and finally restoring the required teeth with crowns is carried out.
Post full mouth rehabilitation, all instructions regarding regular care and maintenance of teeth and restorations with a detailed maintenance and check up visit plan renders long term success to the treatment provided.
